December 17, 1790 - Workers in Mexico City's main plaza found a huge twenty six ton monolith buried face down near what was once a corner of the ceremonial center of Tenochtitlán. This stone has carved symbols of the Aztec universe and/or calendar. The Aztec's history and lore seems to be depicted completely and conveniently in one huge carving. The stone is currently on display in the National Museum of Anthropology and History in Chapultepec Park, Mexico City. Popular belief holds that the Sun Stone was headed for the pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan which is north of Mexico City when it fell into the Lake and canals surrounding the city.
