MiquiztliMarch 25th, 1994 Lela Cargill Second Painting First Painting owner - Saundra Thomas, 1993 Tecuhciztecatl was the mythical god of the 6th day of the Aztec calendar. He is considered to be a moon god. Legend has it that he shone too brightly at one time and the other gods dimmed his face by smashing a rabbit on it. The Maya called this day Cimi (death). Original canvas - $400.00 U.S.D. unframed. *The "frame" in this image is digitally created and not representative of the actual art. My art is based on research, actual site visits, and a wonderful book by Tomas J. Filsinger - "The Aztec Cosmos"Lela Cargill is a new artist to the Austin, Texas area. She has traveled extensively in Mexico and studied Aztec and Maya art for many years. She is currently working in acrylics on canvas and has many more gods to paint. Why a Rabbit in the Moon?The Aztecs say the gods were teasing the moon one night and threw a rabbit in its face. And the rabbit remains marked on the moon's face to this day. Look for the darkened areas on the face of the moon, as though it had been bruised. You can see the rabbit's ears at the top right pointing downward. The rabbit's body is curved along the left side of the moon and his feet are at the bottom just above the *star* crater. Even with the darkened figure of the rabbit, the moon went out to light the world.
